FLORHAM PARK ,NY : Teen crashed stolen car during police chase, cops say on August, Monday 28th 2017
A 17-year-old from New York was arrested Monday night after crashing a stolen motor vehicle and trying to flee by running into a wooded area, police said.
Officer Kevin Langereis was patrol shortly before 8 p.m. when a LoJack system alerted him to a stolen car, police said. He tried to stop the vehicle in the parking lot of the shopping center on the Columbia Turnpike, Detective Lt. Scott Bartell said in a news release.
The vehicle, however, fled the parking lot and crashed a short time later when the driver tried to make a right turn onto Park Avenue from Columbia Turnpike in Hanover, Bartell said.
The driver fled on foot into a wooded area and was caught a short time later with the assistance of the Morris County Sheriff's Department K-9 unit, he said.
The teen was placed under arrest and initially provided officers several false names before he was identified as a 17-year-old from Brooklyn, N.Y., Bartell said.
The teen, who was not named because he is a juvenile, was charged with eluding, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, obstruction, hindering and multiple motor vehicle offenses, Bartell said. He was taken to the Morris County Juvenile Detention Facility.
