OMAHA, NE : Driver dead officer hospitalized after fiery crash near Carter Lake on Monday, 20th May 2024

Omaha Police say a driver died and an officer was taken to the hospital after a fiery crash near Carter Lake Monday night.

OPD says the single-car crash happened around 10:20 p.m. at Carter Lake Shore Drive and Ames Avenue. The initial investigation found the driver of a 2005 Chevy Impala was headed west on Carter Lake Shore Drive at a high rate of speed when it went off the road and struck a large rock. The Impala rolled, ejecting the passenger and partially ejecting the driver, pinning him under the car.

The Impala then caught fire. Officers attempted to free the driver, but could not do so. Shawn Scheibe, 30, of Omaha, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger was uninjured. A responding officer was taken to Nebraska Medicine to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The investigation continues.
