A 19-year-old man died after an ATV crash that also injured another teenager Sunday afternoon in west Phoenix, police said.
Sergio Avila-Roman, 19, died from his injuries after the Sunday incident, Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Armando Carbajal said Tuesday. Police have not identified the other person involved.
The crash happened just after 12:30 p.m. near 67th Avenue and Encanto Boulevard, Carbajal said.
Witnesses told detectives that two ATV drivers, later identified as Avila-Roman and an 18-year-old man, were possibly racing each other when the crash happened, Carbajal said.
Witnesses said the 18-year-old made a right turn in front of Avila-Roman, causing Avila-Roman to crash into the other ATV. The force of the impact caused him to drive off the roadway and into a stop sign on the northwest corner of 65th and Virginia Avenues, Carbajal said.
