St. Charles Parish, LA : Passenger critically injured in Interstate 10 crash over spillway on Wednesday morning, December 21, 2016

An unidentified vehicle passenger was critically injured in a crash Wednesday morning (Dec. 21) that blocked Interstate 10 West over the Bonnet Carre Spillway for more than two hours.

Preliminary findings show a car collided with an 18-wheeler that was parked on the shoulder of I-10, said Melissa Matey, spokeswoman for Louisiana State Police. For unknown reasons, authorities said the car drifted across the fog line and hit the stopped 18-wheeler.

The passenger was transported to University Medical Center for treatment. Video camera footage from Louisiana's Department of Transportation and Development showed a helicopter landing on I-10 West to apparently transport the passenger.

The crash led to I-10 closures that included the on-ramp to westbound I-10 from Interstate 310. The congestion from the incident spread back to Loyola Drive, according to DOTD's Twitter account. The interstate was reopened around 12:45 p.m.

State Police said the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
