BRENTWOOD, TN : Mock crash meant to shake up teen drivers, prevent distracted driving on Tuesday, 25th October 2016
Organizers at Brentwood High School hope teenagers take to heart what they saw Tuesday and stay safe behind the wheel.
The scene was designed to shock -- a teenager thrown through the windshield, emergency vehicles, a medical helicopter and officers testing for DUI. It's the aftermath of what can happen when a teenager behind the wheel stops paying attention.
"The goal of our program is to help young people learn about the dangers of distracted driving -- drunk driving, texting and driving," said Lisa Nice, marketing teacher and DECA advisor at Brentwood High School. "It is a shock factor. Hopefully it'll scare 'em straight."
"The most increasing call volume that we're making right now is distracted driving," said Scott Ellis of Brentwood Fire and Rescue.
Ellis says the most tragic phone call emergency personnel have to make is when they lose a young life.
They hope demonstrations like this will make a difference.
"We're trying to get the message out to that age group that they're part of the problem, but they're part of the solution too," said Ellis. "So the more we get the message out, the more lives we can save."
Brentwood High DECA, in collaboration with the Brentwood Fire Department, Brentwood PD, Williamson EMS and Vanderbilt LifeFlight, conducted the mock crash site at the James C. Parker football field at Brentwood High School.
