Beeville, TX : Refugio man dies in one-vehicle wreck on State Highway 202 near Beeville on Monday, July 18, 2016

A 49-year-old man is dead after officials said he lost control while driving on State Highway 202 near Beeville.

About 11 p.m. Monday, Juan Luis Portillo-Merino was driving a 2004 Dodge Durango on State Highway 202 about 16 miles east of Beeville, according to a news release.

A preliminary investigation by the Department of Public Safety shows Portillo-Merino lost control when the paved road changed to a gravel-dirt surface, and he struck a tree.

The Refugio man was pronounced dead at the scene. The four passengers in the vehicle were taken to Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville with injuries.
