AUGUSTA, ME : Augusta teen operating moped killed following crash involving pickup truck on Tuesday, 17th September 2024

A teenager operating a moped has died from his injuries following a crash in Augusta involving a pickup truck.

Emergency officials responded around 3:15 p.m. to a report of a motor vehicle crash in front of the Rusty Lantern gas station and convenience store on Civic Center Drive, where they found a 17-year-old from Augusta with life-threatening injuries, Augusta police said in a news release.

The teenager was brought to MaineGeneral Health, where he died from his injuries, according to the release.

Investigators determined the boy, who was traveling on a moped, was reportedly attempting to turn left from Civic Center Drive into the store parking lot when he was hit by a Chevrolet Silverado that was traveling southbound on the same road.

The driver of the truck, a 47-year-old man from Farmingdale, was not injured in the crash, according to police.

The crash was reconstructed by the Maine State Police.

Augusta police said the investigation was ongoing and asked that anyone with information about the crash to contact them.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of all those involved in the crash," Augusta police Chief Kevin Lully said in the release.

Kim Liscomb, principal at Cony High School, said the teen was not a student at the school but said they were providing support for students and staff who knew him.
