Gary, IN : Woman was dead after she was struck by a car on early Wednesday morning September 17th 2014
By matching debris left at the scene where a Gary woman was struck and killed early Wednesday, police were able to identify the car and suspected driver, who was arrested within minutes of the fatal crash.
Robin Randolph, 29, was dead when police responded to the crash scene near 17th Avenue and Clark Road about 12:05 a.m., police said.
She was pronounced dead at 1:45 a.m., Lake County Deputy Coroner George Deliopolous said.
Anthony Henry, 31, of Chicago, was arrested after police observed him stagger and slur his words while smelling of alcohol. He faces charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and failure of duty. He may be charged with additional crimes when Sgt. Greg Wolf completes his investigation.
Cpl. Timothy Komoscar and Patrolman Daniel Perryman saw a broken headlight from a Ford vehicle in the roadway near the woman’s body and began a search of the area, police said. At 19th Avenue and Williams Street, just three blocks from the scene, Komoscar located a 2007 Lincoln MKZ stopped in the middle of the road and saw a man walking from the car, police said.
Komoscar noted the front passenger side of the car had damage, including a missing headlight. He spoke to Henry, who pointed to two different houses and said he was walking home after his car ran out of gasoline, police said.
Henry was taken to the Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus where police obtained a blood sample for their investigation.
The Indiana State Police traffic reconstruction team is assisting Gary and Lake County police with the case.
