Florida Highway Patrol has confirmed that the Fort Lauderdale firefighter that was struck by a car along Interstate 95 while changing a flat tire, has died. It happened Tuesday morning near the Yamato Road exit. The firefighter has been identified as Kevin Johns. The driver, Lorenza Simmons, said that her wheels locked up when she tried to brake, swerving off the road after rear-ending the truck in front of her. She said she narrowly avoided the firefighter's personal vehicle, but did not realize he was outside the car fixing a tire. "This is a nightmare," she told Chris McGrath, from WESH's sister station WPBF. A spokesperson said Johns was a 29-year veteran and held the rank of lieutenant.
