A Miami woman faces DUI manslaughter and other charges in connection with a fatal accident on Interstate 75 in Parrish.

Darrell Scruggs, 68, of High Point, North Carolina, died in the crash. Paramedics took his seriously wounded passenger, 69-year-old Naomi Scruggs, to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton.

According the Florida Highway Patrol: Shortly after 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Scruggs' 2012 GMC Terrain and a 2012 Chrysler van driven by Rona S. Ramnarine, 33, of Miami, both headed north in the right lane approaching the Moccasin Wallow Road exit. Ramnarine did not see Scruggs' vehicle “directly in front of her.” Her car struck the rear of Scruggs' car, which veered off the highway and overturned.

Ramnarine is charged with DUI manslaughter, DUI causing serious bodily injury, driving with a suspended or revoked license and causing a fatality and child endangerment.

Ramnarine and her three passengers — a five-year-old girl, a three-year-old girl and a year-old girl — received treatment for minor injuries at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center.
