Texas mom cuffed for drunken crash that killed her 2 children
A Texas woman was cuffed for drunken driving and manslaughter after cops say she crashed her speeding SUV into a pair of parked cars, killing two of her children and hurting two more.
Crystal Suniga, 30, was driving her four kids — all between 10 and 16 years old — when she smashed her 2003 Honda Pilot into the cars parked in the driveway of an Irving home, just on the outskirts of Dallas, about 8 p.m. Saturday, police said.
A crowd of Good Samaritans sprinted over to the wrecked car as a Suniga’s 12-year-old daughter began crying for help.
The two brothers — Ricardo Hernandez, 10, and Angel Reyez, 14 — died before emergency workers responded to the scene.
“Unfortunately, they were pinned under the vehicle,” James McLellan, a spokesman for the Irving Police Department, told the news station.
Crystal Suniga, 30, was allegedly drunk when she crashed her SUV into two parked cars in front of an Irving, Tex., home on Saturday - killing two of her children, and hurting two more.
The young girl was treated for minor injuries at Parkland Memorial Hospital, where her 16-year-old brother was taken for a broken pelvis, according to KXAS-TV.
Suniga was transported to the same hospital, where a test revealed she was driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.18% — more than twice the legal limit.
Investigators also believe the mother was driving as fast as 100 miles per hour — more than three times the posted speed limit of 30 mph — when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed, the news station reported.
Suniga was booked on a slew of charges that included intoxication manslaughter, injury to a child and intoxication assault.
She was being held at Dallas County Jail and expected to be arraigned on Monday.
“Certainly, it was a tragic situation,” McLellan told reporters. “Here is someone that caused the death of her two children. It was completely avoidable and unnecessary.”
