Salt Lake City, UT : Police were looking for a U-Haul driver who they say crashed into a car and ran away on early Friday morning October 3rd 2014
Police were looking for a U-Haul driver who they say crashed into another car Friday morning and ran away.
Around 1:30 a.m. a passenger car heading south was stopped at a red light at 700 East and 800 South. When the light changed, the driver of a U-Haul truck, traveling at a speed of at least 45 mph, did not try to stop and plowed into the passenger car in front of him, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Eddie Cameron.
The U-Haul spun out, hit another truck, and crashed into the fence of a nearby front yard. The U-Haul driver then exited the car and ran west, Cameron said.
One witness told police the driver may have been intoxicated, according to Cameron. Although this has not been confirmed, his failure to brake for the car in front of his vehicle is "an indicator" that he may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs, he said.
The two occupants of the passenger car were hospitalized with minor injuries.
The U-Haul driver was described as being a man in his 30s with a smaller build, Hispanic, wearing a black hoodie.
Utah Highway Patrol troopers responded about a minute after the accident and found a man in a black hoodie nearby who matched the description of the driver. The man ran from troopers, who were able to track him down using a bloodhound, Cameron said. Investigators determined that it was not the same man, but arrested him on other warrants.
"Right now we still have our K-9 officers out looking for our suspect," Cameron said.
Police were trying to determine who rented the U-Haul to see if it was stolen or if the person who rented it was driving the vehicle.
