A car speeding from a traffic stop struck two people walking along Linden Avenue on Thursday night, killing a 37-year-old Springfield woman.Shannon Gonzalez was pinned under that car and died at the scene, Ohio Highway Patrol troopers said. Gregory Croft, 55, was also hit and suffered two broken legs. He was taken by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital.
“It shouldn’t be that way, it just shouldn’t be that way at all,” said Deonn Dubose, a friend of Gonzalez. “She’d give you anything off her back if she had to.”
The suspected driver — 25-year-old Raymone West of Springfield — was arrested after the crash and charged with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated vehicular assault, failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer and drug possession (heroin). He’s in the Clark County Jail on a $1 million bond. Arraignment is scheduled for next week, to give him time to retain an attorney.A trooper saw a car without a headlight on South Limestone Street shortly before 11 p.m. , according to court documents. The trooper stopped the car near Linden Avenue and Washington Street.
But when the trooper exited his cruiser, a passenger ran from the car and the driver sped off, according to a court affidavit. The trooper chased the car on Linden, according to the affidavit, before it ran a red light at Selma Road and the driver lost control. It was probably 15 to 20 seconds,” said Lt. Brian Aller, commander of the state patrol’s Springfield post. “I haven’t seen the video yet but it was very, very quick. No time to call off the pursuit.”
Gonzalez and Croft were walking along the sidewalk on Linden when West lost control of his car, Aller said, and it went airborne, landing on the opposite side of a fence at a local business.
“It was horrible, I saw the dead girl under the car,” said Brandy Morgan, who said she knew Gonzalez.
Investigators found a large amount of cash and drugs in the car, Aller said, including more than 160 grams of heroin, narcotic pills and marijuana. The passenger who ran off has not been apprehended, Aller said.
Morgan said fleeing from officers never ends well. It’s always a tragic incident, always,” she said.Dubose saw Gonzalez just about an hour before the crash, hanging out with several people at a nearby gas station.
