A 35-year-old Slidell resident was killed Sunday night following a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 westbound near the Interstate 10, 12, 59 split, authorities said.

According to Louisiana State Police, the crash claimed the life of Joseph Landon Brooks II, who was driving a 2002 Ford Explorer westbound on Interstate 10 in the left lane shortly after 8:15 p.m.
State Police said a 2016 Toyota Rav4 driven by Douglas J. Thibodeaux, 48, Cumming, Ga., was traveling westbound on Interstate 10 in the right lane adjacent to Brooks’ Explorer and for reasons still under investigation, traveled off the left side of the roadway and onto the left shoulder.
Brooks overcorrected to the right, traveling into the path of Thibodeaux’s SUV, and the two vehicles collided and traveled off the right side of the roadway into the tree line on the north side of Interstate 10, State Police said.
Brooks, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office, authorities said.
Thibodeaux, his wife Muriel and a juvenile passenger were all wearing seat belts and were each transported to University Medical Center New Orleans by Acadian Ambulance, where they were treated for moderate injuries.
As part of the on-going investigation, blood samples were obtained and will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis, State Police said.
