Lowell, MA : Four injured in LRTA bus-truck crash in downtown Lowell on Friday morning, March 17, 2017
Four people were taken to the hospital Friday morning and a truck driver was cited after he allegedly ran a red light and crashed into the side of an LRTA bus at the intersection of Church, Central, and Appleton streets.
The driver of the truck, Joseph Lavigne, 59, of Hudson, N.H., was cited for a red light violation and operating without a license because he did not have the commercial license necessary for the tri-axle truck with a crane that he was driving, police Capt. Timothy Crowley said.
The injuries were minor, Crowley said, and the four passengers were transported to Lowell General Hospital. The drivers of both vehicles declined treatment.
LRTA Administrator Jim Scanlan said that the crash occurred around 8 a.m.,
when the construction truck ran through the red light and struck the LRTA bus near its rear doors. There were long tire marks at the scene, he said.
The truck involved in the crash was owned by S&F Construction, according to pictures taken by the police department. A call to the Hudson company Friday afternoon was not immediately returned.
Lavigne will be summonsed to court at a later date.
