Bonner, MT : Semi Truck Crashes and Spills Soap Near Blackfoot River on Tuesday morning July 22nd 2014

A semi tractor-trailer crashed on Montana Highway 200 about two miles east of Bonner, spilling chemicals used to make industrial soap into the Blackfoot River.

The driver told the Montana Highway Patrol his right front tire blew as he was rounding a corner at about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday. The truck ended up on its side.

Missoula Rural Fire acting battalion chief Paul Finlay told the Missoulian the chemicals appeared to be coming from containers of aluminum sulphate and diethanolamine (di-eh-THEH'-nahl-uh-meen), which are used in making detergents.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks closed the river downstream from the crash. Crews placed a boom on the water to contain the spill and were trying to plug a drainage pipe that was carrying the spill from the ditch into the river.
