Hazelwood, MO : Police officer undergoes surgeries, still critical after rollover crash on Friday, August 26, 2016

A police officer remained in critical condition at a hospital Friday after his patrol car was struck by another car the day before.

Officer Craig Tudor, 37, an 11-year veteran of the Hazelwood police force, underwent a couple of surgeries and was stable in intensive care.

"He's resting comfortably," said Hazelwood Police Capt. James F. Hudanick.

Police declined to give specifics about Tudor's injuries. The Hazelwood Police Department's Benevolent Association is raising money to help in his recovery.

Tudor was responding to an emergency call when his patrol car collided with another vehicle just before 5 p.m. Thursday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s preliminary investigation, the police vehicle was westbound on Dunn Road with emergency lights and siren activated. A driver of a second vehicle who was traveling eastbound attempted to make a left turn into the Village Square Shopping Center and struck the police vehicle on the driver’s side, said Sgt. Al Nothum of the Missouri Highway Patrol. The police vehicle then traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned.

The site is at the northwest corner of Dunn and Interstate 270.

The officer's vehicle was hit with enough force that it landed on its roof on the side of the road. Emergency responders had to pull the officer from the car. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

The other driver was not injured and cooperated with investigating officers, Nothum said.

Sheanell Brandy said she was two cars behind the officer on Dunn Road when the collision occurred. She said the lights and siren on the officer's car had just been activated when his car and the second one crashed.

The patrol car landed just inches from a huge sign for the shopping center.

"When their cars hit, his went flying and for him not to have hit another car or that sign was by the grace of God," Brandy said.

She and at least one other motorist ran to the aid of the officer. The other motorist also went to comfort a child who was in the other car.
