Winter Park, FL : One person critically hurt after escaping fiery crash on Interstate 4 at Fairbanks Avenue on Tuesday, November 11, 2014
Two people escaped their vehicle moments before it burst into flames at the notoriously dangerous Fairbanks Avenue curve.
The car flipped over on the westbound lanes of Interstate 4 at Fairbanks Avenue just after 1 a.m. on Tuesday, according to authorities.
The two people inside the car were able to crawl out before the car was completely involved in the fire.
One person was taken to Orlando Health with serious injuries. The other occupant did not suffer any serious injuries.
The highway was backed up for miles while workers cleared the crash, but all lanes have since been reopened.
The exact cause of this crash is under investigation, and drivers said the wreck is a reminder of the curve’s infamous and costly history.
"I've seen some accidents along the way in the many years that I've worked here and I've seen many accidents on this bend," said William Knopp, a driver.
Two years ago, the Florida Department of Transportation spent nearly $1 million of taxpayers’ money to make the Fairbanks Avenue curve safer.
The changes included drainage upgrades, re-pavement and new signs to warn motorists of the curve; however, as the engineering improvements were done the FDOT believed the real problem-solver would be for drivers to slow down, especially during hazardous conditions.
