Hunterdon County, NJ : Bicyclist seriously injured in Pohatcong Township crash on Thursday, January 7, 2016
A Hunterdon County physician was identified Friday as the bicyclist seriously injured in a crash with a car the day before in Pohatcong Township.
Jeremy Hewens, 66, of Adamic Hill Road in Holland Township, was riding north near a bend on River Road about 2 p.m. Thursday when he was hit by a car going in the opposite direction, according to township police Chief Jeffrey Greenmeir.
The cyclist reportedly suffered head trauma and was flown to St. Luke's Hospital in Fountain Hill. The hospital had no update on his condition Friday.
The crash investigation was ongoing as of Friday afternoon, the chief said.
Hewens is listed on the Hunterdon Healthcare System website as the assistant director of Hunterdon Family Medicine at Delaware Valley.
In 2014, he was named the New Jersey Family Physician of Year by the New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians. An announcement of the award published that year on nj.com includes a biography that says the grandfather's entire medical career has been spent at the family health center.
"All those within the Hunterdon Healthcare family are shaken by the tragic accident involving our respected colleague, Dr. Jeremy Hewens. His family should know that everyone of his fellow caregivers here are praying for his full recovery," said Hunterdon Healthcare President and CEO Robert P. Wise.
