NEW ULM, MN : SE man in custody after crash on Saturday, September 30th 2017
A 36-year-old Sleepy Eye man was booked into the Brown County Jail Sunday morning after an allegedly being involved in several crashes and a high-speed chase with law enforcement in and around New Ulm Saturday night.
The suspect, driving a gray 2008 Hyundai Elantra sedan, according to a New Ulm Police news release, is being held on recommended charges of third-degree driving while intoxicated (DWI), fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, and leaving the scene of an accident.
New Ulm Police received a hit-and-run crash report involving a gray sedan that drove over a street sign near Payne and Sunrise Drive at 8:10 p.m. Saturday.
Four minutes later, police got a report of a gray sedan that traveled over a curb and hit an electrical utility box and the Flandrau State Park entrance sign near Summit Avenue and the park entrance. The gray sedan fled the scene with the driver’s door stuck open and a flat tire, according to police.
The suspect vehicle matched the description of a hit-and-run report on U.S. Highway 14 near Brown County Road 12, just west of New Ulm, reported at 7:53 p.m., according to law enforcement.
Police encountered the suspect vehicle with the driver’s side door open at a 90-degree angle at the 14th Street South and Payne intersection. An officer initiated a traffic stop on the South Payne Street hill but the driver disobeyed the signal to stop and traveled on city streets at speeds of 16 to 27 mph.
The suspect vehicle rammed a Brown County Sheriff’s Office squad car at 18th Street South and State Street. Then it continued south on Broadway, leaving the City of New Ulm on State Highway 15, at speeds of up to 90 mph.
The suspect vehicle slowed in Cottonwood Township, three-quarters of a mile south of State Highway 68. Police and Brown County Sheriff’s Office squad vehicles boxed the suspect vehicle in, causing the driver to make a U-turn, allowing officers to pin the vehicle in, so it was no longer able to move.
The suspect was arrested and transported to New Ulm Medical Center by Allina Ambulance for treatment of facial injuries, police said. The suspect was later released from the hospital and transported to the Brown County Law Enforcement Center. He was booked into jail at 11:01 a.m. Sunday.
The sheriff’s office squad car received light to moderate damage. Minor damage was reported to a police car. The suspect vehicle was impounded by police and was reported to be inside a building at the impound lot that was not accessible to the media.
Identification of the suspect will be released after criminal charges are filed by the Brown County Attorney’s Office, police said. The Minnesota State Patrol assisted police and the Sheriff’s Office.
