Delaware, OH : Women killed and another was injured in a 2 vehicle crash at in Liberty Township On Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

Authorities have released the name of the woman who was killed Tuesday morning when she turned into the path of a tow truck along Rt. 23 at the southern edge of the city of Delaware, in Liberty Township.

Janet C. Vanantwerp, 72, of Delaware, died in the crash, according to the Delaware post of the State Highway Patrol.

The patrol said that Vanantwerp was driving south on Rt. 23 when she tried to turn left onto Cheshire Road just before 10 a.m., and failed to yield to a northbound flatbed truck driven by Carl R. Banfield, 52, of Lexington, Ohio.

The woman, who was using a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

Banfield, an employee of Don's Towing in Delaware, underwent surgery for non-life-threatening injuries at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital.

The broadside impact imbedded the passenger side of the woman's vehicle in the front of the truck, pushing it about 200 feet through the intersection and into a stand of trees. The intersection, which has a traffic signal, is known for crashes due to

traffic backups. Left-hand turns from southbound Rt. 23 are permitted at all times.

"You have a big truck and a smaller car and you're mixing weight with speed and you get these catastrophic outcomes," said Capt. Jim Oberle, of the Delaware fire department.
