Memphis, TN : One man killed in truck collided near Highway 463 on October 16th 2016
A man is dead after his Impala and a delivery truck collided on I-55 near the exit for Highway 463. Authorities have confirmed that 20-year-old Devon Mannery, of Jackson was the driver of the Impala.
Mannery is a student at Jackson State University and his friends are already taking to Facebook, saying this is unbelievable and heartbreaking.
"All he did is smile," one friend posted.
People who frequently drive in that area say it's notoriously dangerous.
"They're coming from three-lane to two-lane, and it's a little hard to transition. And then when you add to that, many drivers today just aren't focused," said David Hale, who lives in Madison and drives by that stretch nearly every day.
"We do have minor fender benders on a weekly basis that occur out there just because of the amount of traffic that's traveling," said Captain Kevin Newman with Madison Police Department. "But a fatality accident is pretty rare at this particular location,"
A new study by the Auto Insurance Center, ranks Mississippi as the deadliest state for drivers.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation blames that on distracted and impaired driving, and says 2 out of 3 people killed in motor vehicle crashes aren't wearing seatbelts.
"Don't be an offensive driver, be a defensive driver," said Captain Newman. "Even if it means the other person may be committing a violation and doing something wrong, you just want to be defensive and make sure you go home alive."
The driver of the delivery truck was not injured.
