Rehoboth, DE : Baby injured in crash north of Millsboro on Wednesday, September 13, 2017
A crash north of Millsboro sent an 8-month-old girl to the hospital Sept. 13.
The crash occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m. as a 40-year-old Laurel man drove a 2006 Kia Optima west on Betts Pond Road, approaching a right curve at the intersection of Delaware Avenue, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.
At the same time, a 54-year-old Dagsboro man was driving a 2004 Mack CV& dump truck loaded with concrete sand east on Betts Pond Road, approaching the same curve.
Fournier said the Kia failed to negotiate the curve, apparently due to high speeds and a wet roadway. The Kia crossed into the eastbound lane directly in the path of the dump truck.
The dump truck driver tried to swerve to the right, but was unsuccessful and hit the Kia head-on.
An 8-month-old girl in the Kia was improperly secured, Fournier said, and was in a forward-facing seat in the right rear seat during the collision. She was taken to Beebe Healthcare before she was transferred in critical condition to A.I. DuPont Hospital.
The man driving the Kia was wearing a seatbelt, Fournier said, and was taken to Beebe Healthcare where he was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries and released. The dump truck driver was uninjured.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues an investigation. No charges have been filed at this time, Fournier said.
Roads in the area of the crash were closed for about four hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
