Dearborn County, IN : One dead in a two-vehicle crash on State Route 48 near Weisberg Road in Dearborn County on Wednesday, January 7, 2015
Two people involved in a fatal crash in southeastern Indiana Wednesday night were on the phone with a 911 dispatcher when it happened.
Authorities say police responded to a two-vehicle crash on State Route 48 near Weisberg Road in Dearborn County around 7 p.m.
According to Indiana State Police, Lloyd Edwards, 78, of Milan, was driving a black pickup truck west on State Route 48 following a black Acura driven by LeeAnna Collins, 23, of Cincinnati. The wreck happened when Edwards struck the back of Collins' car, causing it to go off the road and crash in a ditch, officials say.
The truck continued on State Route 48 and went off the roadway where it flipped over. According to officials, Edwards was trapped inside the truck and pronounced dead on scene.
In a 911 call obtained by FOX19 NOW, a male passenger of Collins' says the driver in the vehicle behind them kept rear-ending them while they were driving.
Collins and a male passenger were transported to Dearborn County Hospital where they were treated for non life-threatening injuries.
Police have not released the nature of the crash but say they are not ruling out road rage. Officials also say a medical condition could be to blame.
Trooper Tommy Walker with Indiana State Police says the fact that Garrett called 9-1-1 helps with the investigation.
"The passenger actually did a really good job of calling 9-1-1, describing what was happening, where they are, which direction they were heading," said Walker.
Walker says regardless of how this accident happened, it's tragic that one man died. He adds the fact that this sparked a conversation about road rage is enough to hopefully keep people from doing it.
"It can be very dangerous and often times can turn deadly," said Walker.
Indiana State Police continue to investigate.
