Jonesboro, GA : Police officer killed in car accident in Clayton County on Sunday night, March 15, 2015
The Clayton County Police Department says they are investgating a deadly wreck involving one of thier own.
The Clayton County police chief said at the hospital the officer was trying to avoid another car when they ran off the road.
The wreck happened late Sunday night on Tara Boulevard at Old Poston Road.
“This is a day that no chief wants to hear. Devastating to the Clayton County police department, family, devastating to the community and devastating to law enforcement in general,” said Chief of Police Gregory Porter.
Both roads have been shut down in the area while investigators work to clear the wreck and figure out what happened.
Police say the officer was responding to a "prowler-type" call when the accident happened. The officer, who was alone in the police cruiser, had his lights on.
Porter said the officer's name has not yet been released, pending next of kin notification.
The officer had been with the department approximately one year.
