Nashville, TN : Crossing guard struck in hit-and-run accident in Antioch Monday morning, September 26, 2016
A school crossing guard suffered minor injuries after being struck by a hit-and-run driver near an Antioch elementary school on Monday morning.
Police Lemuel Frazier, 58, was near the intersection of Richards Road and Dowdy Drive in front of J.E. Moss Elementary when he was struck.
Frazier injured his knee when he was hit by the car. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
People who live near the school were not happy to learn their community crossing guard was the victim of a hit-and-run.
“When I saw it on the news this morning, I was very upset. I said, ‘My friend done got hit,’” said Tammy Daniels, who knows Frazier.
Witnessed described the driver in the hit-and-run as an Asian male with black hair driving a red sedan, possibly a Chevrolet Aveo. The car may be missing the passenger side mirror from hitting the crossing guard.
Police are asking more witnesses to come forward.
“We all know how busy it is out there. You can’t have a crash like that and someone not see it,” said Sgt. Mark Denton with Metro Police School Crossing Guards.
Metro police have more than 200 crossing guards in 200 school zones.
“It is dangerous, that’s why it’s so important for people to understand, slow down in school zones. Be aware of what’s going on. Don’t be in a hurry and simply follow the directions of the crossing guard,” Denton said.
Police said they have issued 168 citations for people speeding in a school zone since school started on Aug. 5. By this time last year, 282 citations had been issued.
People who live in the area say they’re tired of it.
“They fly up and down the street all the time,” Daniels said.
“I took video one afternoon. They’re head-on and nobody will budge trying to get through. The school buses can’t even get through there. That’s just how bad it is,” said Pam Brashear, who has lived across from the school since 1977.
Anyone with information in this case is asked to call police.
