Fort Lauderdale,FL : Father charged after Lauderhill ATV crash on may, Sunday 21th 2017
father taking his 10-year-old son for a ride on an ATV landed them both in the hospital and the dad charged with multiple crimes.
The crash happened about 7 p.m. Sunday as Donny Delane Chestnut, 31, was driving the all-terrain-vehicle on the 3700 block of Northwest Eighth Street with his son on the back, according to a Lauderhill police arrest affidavit.
Witnesses told police that Chestnut ran a stop sign at a high rate of speed and crashed head-on into the front of a Kia Soul by the vehicle owner’s driveway.
The SUV driver wasn’t hurt but both Chestnut and his son were thrown from the ATV, according to police. The boy cut his ankle and fractured his collarbone while Chestnut had a severe cut on his head. Neither were wearing a helmet and both were hospitalized.
According to police, after hospital staff cut Chestnut’s pants in order to treat him, five plastic bags that later tested positive for marijuana were found in one of his pockets.
Chestnut is facing charges that include child neglect, drug possession, reckless driving and unlawfully operating an ATV on a public street. Additionally, the crash and arrest happened while Chestnut was on probation for a previous charge of second-degree murder, according to police.
Because of his injuries, Chestnut has not yet had an initial court appearance to set his bond.
