Two drivers died and two children were injured in a two-vehicle head-on crash Tuesday morning on Minnesota 45 between Carlton and Scanlon.
The Minnesota State Patrol reported that a 2011 Chevrolet Impala driven by a 32-year-old Carlton man was traveling south on Highway 45 just before 8:30 a.m. when it crossed the center line and struck a northbound 1999 Oldsmobile 88 driven by a 56-year-old Esko woman.
One of the drivers was taken away by ambulance and later died from their injuries. The other driver reportedly died at the scene.
The male driver's two children -- a 5-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son -- were in their car seats in the back seat. Sgt. Neil Dickenson, Northeast Region public information officer for the State Patrol, said one child was taken by ambulance to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, while the other was taken by ambulance to Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul.
The names of those involved in the crash will be released Wednesday morning, the State Patrol said.
The accident occurred south of Interstate 35 on a stretch of Highway 45 that's posted at 55 mph.
