Morganton, NC : One injured after wreck involving Case Farm truck on Wednesday, May 31, 2017

A woman was injured and chickens littered the road after a Case Farms truck hit a car in Morganton on Wednesday morning.

Ashley Wilson, 23, of Morganton was stopped at the intersection of Salem Road and U.S. 64 near Morganton Honda when she attempted to make a left turn onto U.S. 64 when a Case Farms truck driving north struck her vehicle, said Officer T. Hall with Morganton Department of Public Safety.

Wilson had to be removed from her vehicle from the front passenger side door and was transported to Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge in Morganton and was later flown to a hospital in Charlotte. Her specific injuries are unknown, but it seemed to be serious, Hall said.

“The Case Farms truck noticed that it was pulling out right about the time he passed the bread store (Flowers Discount Bakery) and the vehicle pulled out in front of him and he did not have time to stop,” Hall said.

The Case Farms truck was transporting hundreds of chickens at the time of the wreck. After the collision, several chickens fell to the ground and were spread across the road. Some chickens were still moving around while others were motionless.

Robert Schemke witnessed the accident while he was on his way to his child’s school play.

He saw Wilson pull out from Salem Road with the Case Farm truck “maybe about 40 yards away from where she was turning,” he said.

After the wreck, Schemke jumped out and ran to check on Wilson, who he said was unconscious when he first got there.

“I held her neck straight and kept talking to her and got her to come around,” he said. “I hope she is okay.”

There was no one else in the car with Wilson, according to officers.

About an hour after the wreck, workers with Case Farms picked up chickens that were in the road and put them back in their cages.

Case Farms would not comment to The News Herald on the incident.

Wilson’s car was totaled after the collision and the front driver’s side of the truck was damaged.

Agencies that responded to the wreck along with MDPS were Burke County EMS and Burke REACT.
