Decatur, AL : Hatton student dies in wreck; woman killed in earlier accident on Franklin-Lawrence line on Monday, November 28th 2016
A Hatton High student died in a wreck Monday afternoon in the Wolf Springs community in Lawrence County, officials said.
Lawrence County Coroner Greg Randolph identified the victim as 16-year-old Ashely Cornelius, of Lawrence 236, Town Creek.
State troopers are investigating the accident.
Reports indicate Cornelius was heading home from school. Randolph said the wreck was less than two miles from her home. Reports said the wreck occurred about 2:26 p.m.
Authorities said she was a passenger in the car, which went off the road in a curve on Lawrence 236 and flipped several times, ejecting the girl.
Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Mitchell said the other two girls in the vehicle were wearing seat belts and were not injured.
Another person was killed about 10 minutes earlier in an accident near the Franklin-Lawrence county line.
Troopers said the first accident occurred at 2:16 p.m. on County Line Road (Franklin 99).
Emergency personnel at the scene said the victim was a 54-year-old woman who lives on County Line Road near the accident site.
Officials said the woman was driving a Kawasaki utility vehicle that was hit in the rear by a car.
“Apparently, when the car hit the utility vehicle it went off the road and started flipping and threw the lady out,” said Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver, who went to the scene.
Oliver said the victim was taken by ambulance to Russellville Hospital.
Franklin County Coroner Elize Malone said the woman was pronounced dead at the hospital.
