Livingston, TN : Two men killed after vehicle crashes into garbage truck in Livingston on Tuesday morning, Nov 10, 2015

Two men were killed in a crash involving a garbage truck in Livingston on Tuesday morning.

Witnesses said the men were emptying trash behind the garbage truck when a pickup slammed into them, killing them instantly.

Police said the driver had a medical emergency prior to the incident on East Main Street. Witnesses said he did not slow down.

“The investigation is open,” said Trooper Darren Butler with Tennessee Highway Patrol. “There is a possible mental condition of the driver of the red truck. We don’t know, but it’s definitely a possibility.”

The victims were identified as 51-year-old Johnny Massengale and 22-year-old Anthony Toney. Massengale was a 16-year veteran of Public Works, while Toney had only been on the job five days.

The driver of the pickup truck is in critical condition after being taken by LifeFlight to the hospital. He had to be extricated from the pickup truck.

This is the first deadly accident involving city employees in the city’s history.

“It’s never happened in the history of Livingston. We have never had a city employee die on the job,” Livingston Mayor Curtis Hayes said. “This is so tragic. My heart just bleeds over. We are a small town and we’re a team and a family, but we are a family first.”
