Terre Haute, IN : Man killed in motorcycle accident at U.S. 41 and Haythorne Avenue on Wednesday afternoon, May 18, 2016
A Vermillion County man riding a motorcycle was killed in an accident at U.S. 41 and Haythorne Avenue late this afternoon, according to Terre Haute city police.
The accident victim has been identified as Jesse Leonard, 33.
According to police, just before 5 p.m., witnesses say Leonard was traveling north on U.S. 41 in a construction zone.
As the motorcyclist was approaching the Haythorne intersection, police said, the driver of a black Chevrolet Impala stopped at the westbound stop sign pulled into the path of the motorcycle.
The motorcycle struck the vehicle in the front driver's side and the motorcyclist was ejected from his vehicle, according to police.
A Terre Haute Police Department detective was one of the witnesses to the accident and he immediately called for medical assistance and began giving aid to the motorcyclist, according to a news release.
Leonard was taken to an area hospital by the Terre Haute Fire Department, where he died from his injuries.
The driver of the Impala was Gordon Smith, 30, of Chippewa Falls, Wisc. Smith did not report any injuries from this accident, police said, but was also taken to an area hospital for investigative purposes.
Members of the THPD/Vigo County Sheriff's Department fatal accident construction team remained at the scene early this evening investigating the accident.
It is unknown at this time if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
