SIOUX RAPIDS, IA : Rebel girls wreck Warriors in 2nd half on Tuesday, January, 23rd 2018
There are second half turnarounds and there are second half turnarounds, but not often does a team complete a transformation like Sioux Central’s did Tuesday night against Alta-Aurelia. After trailing 31-24 at the break, the Rebels poured in 49 second half points for a commanding 73-55 victory.
“We came out a little flat in the first half,” Sioux Central girls basketball coach Alan Vasher said. “Alta-Aurelia was out-hustling us to every rebound and loose ball. We made some adjustments at halftime, but it really just came down to the girls playing a little harder.”
Both teams came out getting buckets as a 15-15 tie carried into the second quarter.
The Warriors’ edge in the hustle department began to show on the scoreboard in the following eight minutes while the Rebels scored just nine points to trail 31-24 at the break.
The switch got flipped out of the locker room.
Sioux Central nearly doubled its score in the third with 23 points while Alta-Aurelia mustered just eight for a 47-39 game in favor of the home team.
The Rebel offense continued to roll in the fourth with 26 more points while the Warriors used the pace to get 16 for the 73-55 final score.
“The girls really responded well in the second half, especially at the offensive end,” Vasher said. “They are really understanding their roles and starting to play together well at the right time.”
Dani Boettcher was nearly unstoppable for the Rebels, scoring 36 points on just 18 field goal attempts. She also led the team on the glass with eight boards. Shera Smith finished the game with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists. Karly Boettcher led the way in helpers with five.
The win marks Sioux Central’s third after a two-game mini skid by just two combined points.
The Rebels will travel to Sac City Friday in the hopes of improving their 11-6 overall and 5-3 conference records against the East Sac County Raiders.
