Kansas City, KS : Two children ejected, killed in rollover crash in Northeast Kansas City on Friday morning, March 17, 2017
Two children were killed and two adults critically injured in a rollover traffic crash Friday morning in Northeast Kansas City.
It was the fourth double fatality wreck this year in Kansas City where no seat belts were worn, according to police.
The wreck occurred about 11:35 a.m. Friday in the 6700 block of East 12th Street, between Ewing and Newton avenues.
Police have not released the ages of the children who were killed, but witnesses said they appeared to be about nine and six years old.
The two others in the vehicle, a man who was driving and a woman who was a passenger, were taken to a hospital with critical injuries, according to police.
Police said it was not known how the occupants of the car were related.
Kansas City Police Sgt. Kari Thompson said that the two children and the man were ejected from the vehicle which came to rest on its wheels.
None of the occupants were using seat belts or car seats, Thompson said.
Witnesses told police the car was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on 12th Street in the residential neighborhood and ran a stop sign before the driver apparently lost control .
The four-door sedan sheared through a wooden utility pool, crashed through a chain link fence, and ended up in the yard of a house.
Witness Cynthia Peguero said she and her former mother-in-law, a certified nurse, saw the crash and ran to help.
She said the two boys and the man were on the ground, and the woman appeared to be pinned in the vehicle.
Her former mother-in-law rendered aid until paramedics arrived.
Thompson said the deaths were the 19th and 20th traffic fatalities this year in Kansas City, including the four double fatality crashes. There were eight at the same time last year.
Thompson implored people to use seat belts and make sure that their children are properly secured.
