A man has been arrested and charged with a DUI after, police said, he slammed into the front of a South Florida home, early Monday morning.
According to investigators, 30-year-old Christopher Cunningham ran a stop sign and crashed his Lexus sedan into the home of Lisette Hernandez, located at 2045 Southwest 61st Avenue, just after midnight. Fortunately, no one was sleeping in the front bedroom at the time of the accident.
Hernandez's mother, who was in the next room, said the whole house shook. "I was sleeping with my granddaughter in her room," said Rachel Vega. "All I heard was a 'boom,' a big explosion."
Witnesses said the driver and a passenger were hot-rodding through the Miramar neighborhood and blew through a stop sign before careening into the home. "I heard the car, like coming down the street really fast," said area resident Alicia Rogers. "Before I knew it ... I was like, 'Oh, my God. He's not stopping.'"
"He had to be going like 90 to 100. He was going super fast," said Joanna Strachan, "so next thing you know, he hit the wall so hard, like 'boom.'"
Witnesses told police Cunningham and his passenger tried to flee the scene, but they could not get the car moving. It was at that point that, witnesses said, they saw Cunningham tuck something into his pants and head off to an empty lot, which is where officers later found a nearly empty bottle of vodka.
Police said Cunningham, a Pembroke Pines resident, refused a breathalyzer and field society test. The police report also stated that an officer noticed he had bloodshot, glassy eyes and noticed him slurring and talking to himself.
According to the report, Cunningham told police that he tried to hit the brakes before crashing into the home, but they failed.
Cunningham has been charged with DUI and DUI with damage to property. "Good, he deserves it," said Vega. "I mean, come on, if you're going to drink, drink, but don't be driving like you're going crazy."
The family is counting their blessings. "I was just thankful that my daughter wasn't in the room sleeping. That's all I can say," said Vega. "Thank the Lord."
No one was injured in the crash, but everyone involved recognized this story could have very easily had a very different ending.
