Winston-Salem, NC : Motorcyclist, passenger injured in Statesville crash on Interstate 40 Sunday afternoon, April 24, 2016

A cardboard box of blankets is cited as the reason an Indiana man crashed his motorcycle on Interstate 40 Sunday afternoon.

Anthony Easterline, 48, of Angola, Ind., was transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem via Iredell EMS, and a passenger on his motorcycle, Tracey Bates, 45, of Fremont, Ind., was taken via Iredell EMS to Iredell Memorial Hospital.?N.C. Highway Patrol First Sgt. Brian Owenby said Easterline was operating a motorcycle, traveling west on Interstate 40 around 3:17 p.m. Sunday, when a cardboard box of blankets blew off the back of a pickup truck and into Easterline’s lane of travel.

“He took evasive action,” Owenby said of Easterline, who laid down the bike on I-40 between N.C. 115 and the Radio Road bridge. The bike slid into another motorcycle, but there were no injuries reported on that bike.

Owenby said those involved in the crash were unable to provide a description of the truck and it’s likely that driver didn’t realize the box blew off.

The crash closed the westbound lanes of I-40 for more than an hour Sunday.
