MONTICELLO, IN : 2 White Co. teenagers die in crash on April, Sunday 9th 2017
Two White County teenagers were killed in a crash Sunday afternoon, police say.
The two-vehicle crash occurred about 1:25 p.m. Sunday, April 9, at Ind. 39 and East 175 North just outside Monticello, according to a White County Sheriff's Department press release.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a green 2004 Chevy pickup truck driven by 17-year-old Chaz Rodziewicz, Monticello, was heading north on Ind. 39 near its intersection with 175 North. Dylan Mullis, 16, Monon, was a passenger in the truck. A silver 1999 Jeep driven by Grace Dodson, 16, Monticello, was traveling behind the truck on the highway.
During that time, police say the Jeep was approaching the back of the truck and swerved to the left to avoid hitting it. As the Jeep swerved over to the southbound lane of traffic, there was an oncoming vehicle. Dodson then got back in the northbound lane and hit the truck, which caused the truck to slide off the east side of the highway and strike a tree. The Jeep also slid off the east side of the road and came to rest in the woods, the release states.
The two occupants in the truck, Rodziewicz and Mullis, were pinned inside and were pronounced dead at the scene by the White County Deputy Coroner, according to the release.
WLFI-TV reported that Rodziewicz and Mullis were students at North White High School in Monon. Rodziewicz was a junior and Mullis was a sophomore, and both played on the school's baseball team.
Monticello Fire/Ambulance Service transported Dodson from the scene to a hospital in Lafayette.
Indiana State Police, Monticello Police Department Monticello Fire Department, Monon Police Department, White County Emergency Management Agency and Farney's Wrecker Service also assisted at the scene.
