LEESBURG , FL : Man arrested in crash that killed motorcyclist on Saturday, 20th August, 2016
A Leesburg man was arrested Monday on charges he rear-ended a motorcycle in a fatal crash over the weekend. Police initially thought he was a passenger in the car.
Jose Omar Azua, 33, admitted he had three to four beers before he crashed his Saturn into a Harley-Davidson around 9:30 p.m. Saturday near U.S. 27 and Tally Road, resulting in the death of 54-year-old motorcyclist Lori Dudley, according to Leesburg police.
Azua was detained by officers responding to the crash shortly after he tried to walk away from the wreck. Azua was released after he told officers he was a passenger and that the driver had left.
According to an arrest affidavit released Tuesday morning, Azua walked into the police department late Monday morning to gather information about the crash “his vehicle” was involved in.
Azua then agreed to talk with detectives about the crash. After taking a break to talk with his ex-girlfriend, Azua then admitted he lied to police about not being the driver and was arrested.
He said he didn’t know the name of the other occupant of the car, who witnesses had described as a male wearing a red shirt.
Azua was charged with manslaughter in a vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of an accident involving death. He remained in the Lake County jail Tuesday in lieu of $35,000 bail. He also was arrested in 2011 on DUI charges and resisting arrest.
