Driver in fiery Burbank crash that killed five was driving drunk and stoned
A solo car crash in Burbank resulted in a fiery wreck, killing five people and injuring one teenager, authorities said.
Burbank officials received word of the crash shortly before 4:15 a.m. Saturday. The crash happened on the Scott Road off ramp on the southbound 5 Freeway. A worker at a nearby Jamba Juice saw the crash and alerted authorities.
Authorities confirmed to Eyewitness News there were six people in the car - five were killed and one was injured.
The injured victim, described as an 18-year-old female, was taken to Los Angeles County Medical Center to be treated for non life-threatening injuries. Authorities say she was a backseat passenger in the car. She was found a short distance away from the vehicle when first responders arrived on scene. It was unclear how she got out of the vehicle.
Police say the four-door Nissan exited the southbound 5 Freeway on the Scott Road off ramp at a high rate of speed. It struck the guard rail on San Fernando Boulevard, lost control, smashed into a concrete freeway pylon and burst into flames. Officials said the car only had five seatbelts.
Burbank Police Sgt. Darin Ryburn said speed was likely involved in the cause of the crash. It's unknown whether alcohol was a factor.
The car was fully engulfed in flames when first responders arrived. The crash also ignited a small grass fire, which forced two lanes of the freeway to be shut down for a short time. The car and grass fires were extinguished by firefighters. The Scott Road off ramp will remain closed until further notice.
