Knoxville, TN :Church bus crash One person was killed and seven others sent to the hospital Thursday evening after 5.30 p.m July 17th 2014.

Officials said a crash in North Knoxville killed one person and sent seven others to the hospital. It happened Thursday evening shortly after 5:30 at the intersection of North Broadway and Oglewood Avenue. Broadway was shut down for several hours.
Knoxville Police Department spokesperson Darrell DeBusk said the bus, filled with 18 people participating in a mission trip through Johnson University, was heading down Oglewood when it malfunctioned at the Broadway intersection.
"The bus had a red light but apparently was unable to stop for the red light and drove through the intersection," he said.
In its path were two vehicles. A Kia, which was traveling southbound on Broadway and a Chevy S10 pickup truck, which was going northbound. The bus hit both cars.Officials have identified the driver in the Kia as a female, and said she died at the scene.
Police said driver of the KIA latched the seat belt to keep the "seat belt reminder alarm" from activating. The person was sitting on top of the seat belt and was not restrained at all. DeBusk said the seat belt would have made a difference in the crash, as the damage to the vehicle was mainly contained to the passenger side of the vehicle.
The name of the driver is not being released until her family has been notified. They said she is from Knoxville. Two people in the Chevy went to UT Medical Center. Cory Butcher, 16, of Knoxville was the driver of the truck and was wearing a seat belt. The passenger in the vehicle, Sam Butcher, has possibly serious injuries. DeBusk said he was not wearing a seat belt.
Some on board the bus also went to the hospital."At this point we believe that there were 18 total individuals on the bus," DeBusk said. "Three adults were transported to Tennova, the old St. Mary's. Two juveniles from the bus were transported to Children's Hospital."
