Hagerstown, MD : Eight injured in Friday night crash on I-70 on Saturday, February 17th 2017
An investigation continues into a Friday night crash on Interstate 70 that caused multiple injuries and closed the highway for hours, Maryland State Police said Saturday.
Police responded to the crash at 8:45 p.m. near the 36-mile marker and determined that a westbound 2009 International tractor-trailer struck a 2015 Dodge Ram pickup truck that also was traveling west, forcing it to swerve into the median and overturn, according to a state police news release.
The tractor-trailer also went into the median, spilling metal material that it was hauling into the eastbound I-70 lanes. An eastbound 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan then struck the material in the roadway and overturned, police said.
Jesse Michl, 24, a passenger in Dodge Ram, was flown from the scene to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, the release said. He was listed in critical condition on Monday.
Another seven people were taken to Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, with two of them later being flown to the shock-trauma center.
Those initially taken to Meritus were:
• Jose Sifuentes, 45, of Dallas, the driver of the tractor-trailer. His condition was undetermined on Monday.
No longer listed as a patient at Meritus are the following:
• Marcus Gillespie, 24, of Fairfax, Va., the driver of the pickup truck
• Nicolas Doyle, 24, a passenger in the pickup
• Matthew Florence, 26, another passenger in the truck
• Trevor Mills, 25, who also was in the pickup
• Nita McCargar, 55, of Wadsworth, Ohio, the driver of the Dodge Caravan
• Arora McCargar, 17, a passenger in the van
The conditions of the victims were unknown Saturday night.
Brett McCrae, 29, of Arlington, Va., the driver of a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee that also was involved in the accident, was not injured.
His passengers, Joseph McCabe, 31, and Rutherford Pierrepont, 27, also were uninjured.
The eastbound and westbound lanes of I-70 were shut down Friday night for several hours as emergency crews cleaned up the scene, police said.
Maryland state highway workers arrived to assist with traffic control and to detour traffic onto U.S. 40 from eastbound I-70.
The westbound shoulder of I-70 was opened at 11 p.m. to allow traffic to get by the accident scene.
Troopers from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division responded to the scene to assist with the investigation, the release said.
No one has been charged in connection with the crash.
