A 45-year-old Mt. Vernon man was seriously injured Wednesday after his semi went off the road and overturned at an Interstate 64 ramp.
Roger Modglin, the semi driver, was first taken to Good Samaritan Hospital and was later airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital with severe injuries.
The crash happened at 6:26 p.m. Wednesday.
Modglin was traveling north on I-57 and had exited on to the I-64 westbound ramp in Jefferson County.
Then, for unknown reasons, the semi went off the right side of the road through the grass, eventually crossing the I-64 westbound ramp from I-57 south. The semi struck several trees and overturned before coming to a stop, according to an Illinois State Police news release.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation but officials believe it was medical related, the release states.
The I-64 westbound entrance ramp from I-57 south was closed until early morning for the clean-up.
