Staunton, VA : Son calls friends, not 911 in crash that killed father on September 27 2016

Virginia State Police are looking for an 18-year-old Stuarts Draft man in connection with a fatal Sept. 17 nighttime crash that killed his father on Coleytown Road.

The crash took place as a 1995 Honda Civic driven by Nathaniel L. Hise was headed north on Coleytown Road before it struck a fence and overturned, police said. Tommy E. Hise, 53, of Waynesboro, died following the crash.

At the crash scene, instead of calling authorities, Nathaniel Hise, 18, the son of Tommy Hise, allegedly phoned a friend in Mint Spring, Virginia State Police said. Three others arrived at the scene and helped flip the car over with the elder Hise still inside. It's not clear if the father was dead or alive when the car was flipped right-side-up, according to Sgt. Kenneth Hyden.

The elder Hise was placed in the backseat of an unidentified woman's car, with his son riding in the backseat with him, Hyden said. They arrived at Augusta Health in Fishersville, where the elder Hise was declared dead at 12:05 a.m. the following day. Nathaniel Hise was airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center with a head injury, but Hyden said he left the Charlottesville hospital on Sept. 18 against the advice of doctors.

Hyden said the younger Hise was the driver of the vehicle when it crashed, but said when he was questioned at the hospital he would not divulge who was behind the wheel. Hyden said investigators were able to determine the son was the driver, and said he is now charged with hit-and-run for failing to tell police who was driving.

Hyden said alcohol played a role in the crash, and said Hise was reportedly driving without a license.

Hyden said Nathaniel Hise is now considered at-large. He is described as a white male, 5 feet and 11 inches tall and weighs 165 pounds. Hyden said he has hazel eyes and brown hair. Hise has no fixed address.

Anyone with information on Hise's whereabouts is asked to call their local police agency, Hyden said.

The crash remains under Virginia State Police investigation.
