GREENCASTLE, PA : Northbound lanes of I-81 re-opened after crash near Greencastle on Tuesday, 23rd August, 2016
Greencastle, Pennsylvania
The northbound lanes of Interstate 81 were closed for more than four hours Tuesday after a crash involving two tractor-trailers and a vehicle in the Greencastle area, according to the Franklin County (Pa.) Department of Emergency Services.
One person was flown from the scene to a hospital, an emergency services official said.
The lanes were reopened at about 7:30 p.m. after the 3:15 p.m. accident occurred at mile-marker 3.5, the agency said.
Initially, both directions of the interstate were closed.
At about 7:30 p.m., the backup had reached down to Interstate 70, according to Maryland State Police at the Hagerstown barrack.
Around 7 p.m., there was a four-vehicle collision in the northbound I-81 lanes in the area of the U.S. 40 interchange, a police spokesman said.
That collision, which resulted in minor injuries, was probably caused by the backup from the Greencastle crash, he said.
Following the Greencastle-area crash, a 911 dispatcher said emergency responders were reportedly rerouting traffic using U.S. 11.
Further details of that crash were not immediately available.
