McCarr, KY : Pike County School Bus involved in accident Wednesday morning, March 22, 2017
No one was injured when the front wheels of a Pike County School’s bus carrying 12 students from Blackberry Elementary went into a creek while the bus driver was attempting to turn the bus into Allburn Hollow, which is located in the McCarr area of Blackberry.
The accident occurred around 7:20 a.m. Wednesday morning just off of Ky. State Route 1056.
According to Ancie Casey, Transportation Director at the Pike County Board of Education, the driver of the bus was Jerry Roberts.
Roberts told him that while attempting to turn the bus in a confined area, the edge of the narrow road broke off causing the front wheels of the bus to go over the steep embankment of the creek.
Appalachian First Response Ambulance Service responded to the accident for precautionary measures. Neither the driver nor any of the students on board the bus were transported to a hospital and no one received medical treatment at the scene.
Casey said although Roberts is a long-time driver for the county, this was not his usual route; the driver for this route was off work this week.
Roberts was given a drug test, which is mandatory for any driver involved in an accident no matter how minor the accident is. Roberts passed the drug test.
The students were transported to Blackberry Elementary soon after the accident.
Trooper Jason McLellan with the Kentucky State Police Post 09 out of Pikeville, Ky. investigated the accident.
The Blackberry Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene, but their assistance was not needed. A wrecker was used to pull the school bus out of the creek.
