Fontana, CA : Fontana teenager dies in two-car crash on Thursday, January, 11th 2018on Friday, January, 12th 2018
A Fontana teenager died as a result of injuries she sustained in a two-vehicle collision in the western unincorporated county area of Fontana on Jan. 11, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner's Division.
At 8:41 p.m., officers with the California Highway Patrol and paramedics responded to the collision at the intersection of Cherry Avenue and Arrow Route.
Paramedics located a driver, 18-year-old Rebecca Ann Barrasa, with traumatic injuries. She was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and later pronounced deceased in the emergency department.
The CHP gave this account of the incident:
Maria Gonzalez of South Gate was driving a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder westbound on Arrow, approaching Cherry at high rate of speed, according to witnesses.
Barrasa was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla eastbound on Arrow and was turning left onto northbound Cherry.
The vehicles collided within the intersection. As a result of the crash, the Pathfinder rolled onto its roof and the Corolla remained disabled with major damage.
Gonzalez and two juveniles who were passengers in the Pathfinder were extricated from the vehicle by San Bernardino County Fire personnel. Both juveniles were transported to Loma Linda Children’s Hospital for suspected minor injuries. Gonzalez was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for suspected major injuries.
Gonzalez was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The crash is still under investigation, pending further witness information, the CHP said.
Witnesses to this collision are asked to contact Officer K. Simmons of the Rancho Cucamonga CHP at (909) 980-3994.
A GoFundMe page has been created by Shirley Ann Jakubowski to help raise funds for Barrasa's family.
"She had her whole future ahead of her, with her birthday just four days away. We should be celebrating but instead we'll be grieving," Jakubowski said.
