One Athens man was killed and another was injured Friday night when their cars collided head-on on

Lavender Road, Athens-Clarke County police said.

Both men, who were the lone occupants in their respective vehicles, were believed by police to have been under the influence of alcohol. An investigation is continuing in an attempt to determine who was at fault, Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Epifanio Rodriguez said Monday.

According to police, the crash occurred just before 8 p.m. on Lavender Road near Abelia Way, where the car driven by Jose Lozano-Calderon crossed into the opposite lane and struck the car driven by 21-year-old Manuel Martinez-Guerra.

Lozano-Calderon, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

Information on Martinez-Guerra’s injuries was not immediately available.
