Detroit, MI : Two pedestrians killed by car after crash at Cortland and 14th streets in Detroit on Saturday night, Oct 17, 2015

A 42-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man were killed Saturday night when they were hit by a car that was involved in an accident at Cortland and 14th streets in Detroit.

Local residents say the man was a fixture in the neighborhood for decades.

"He’s like a cousin to me, a brother," said family friend Janice Gay. "It’s unreal, a good person, he didn’t deserve it."

The victims were walking to work at the time of the accident.

Police say the Explorer ran through a stop sign and hit a silver car, which caused the Explorer to spin into the victims. The victims were standing on the sidewalk when they were hit. They were pronounced dead at the scene at around 8:30 p.m.

"They were innocent people," Gay said.

According to police, speed was a factor in the crash.

The people inside the Explorer fled the scene on foot.

A 25-year-old man who matched the description of the driver went to the police station later that night and tried to report the car stolen.

Officers noticed cuts on his hands and pieces of glass on him.

He was arrested and taken to the Detroit Detention Center for processing.
