Kailua Kona,HI : Cyclist dies after collision with truck on November, Thursday 9th 2017
A 61-year-old man who was riding a bicycle is dead following a collision Thursday with a pickup on Queen Kaahumanu Highway at the intersection to Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole.
The crash was reported about 3:45 p.m.
Hawaii Police Department Maj. Robert Wagner said the Kailua-Kona cyclist was traveling south when the collision occurred. The truck driver, 41, of Kapaau, was traveling north and attempted to turn at the airport. Wagner said the cyclist crashed into the bed area of the pickup.
The Kailua-Kona man was taken to Kona Community Hospital by ambulance in critical condition. It was later reported he died.
Police did not release the identities of the cyclist or pickup driver. The crash is under investigation.
Traffic in the southbound lane was at a standstill as emergency vehicles responded to the incident Thursday.
Hawaii Fire Department Battalion Chief William Bergin speculated construction in the area had a lot to do with the collision.
