An off-duty New York City police detective was charged with driving while intoxicated following a two-car crash on Route 17K Sunday night.
Town police Chief Michael Clancy said Ronald Nickens, 50, of the hamlet of Wallkill, was westbound on 17K around 11:30 p.m. when he apparently crossed the double-yellow line and struck an eastbound car near the entrance to the New York Air National Guard Base, police said.
A town police officer came upon the crash scene by chance before it was reported, Clancy said. Neither Nickens nor the several occupants of the other car were hurt.
Nickens was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, along with failure to keep right, crossing the double-yellow line and having an open container in the car. He was released to his employer pending a Sept. 9 Town Court appearance.
